The story so far 1846-2014
The Vlisco heritage is quite unlike any other. Since 1846, we have created over 350,000 unique textiles influencing the fashion landscape in West and Central Africa. These fabrics reflect true Dutch craftsmanship and were originally known as ‘Hollandais’, from the French word for ‘Dutch’. Today, their influence reaches the fashion world at large with prints playing a key role in fashion expression worldwide.
Vlisco is still however the only brand creating authentic Dutch Wax fabrics recognisable for their unique design, colours and wax craquelé. Now, as it was in the past, every centimetre has its own unique story to tell due to our special wax process, originating from batik techniques. The most well known fabrics are Wax-block recognised by the layering of colour and design; the glorious Super-wax, which uses a finer quality cotton, has 2 core colours and a marbled pattern; and Java, which reflects Vlisco’s Indonesian relations of times gone by, with finer more detailed prints. Four fabric collections per year are launched which form a melting pot of heritage, craftsmanship and imagination as inspiration for our consumers. Each collection creates a new chapter in the Vlisco history by merging the rich past with an innovative future.
These distinctive products are not only admired in Africa but have inspired many to embrace the merging of Dutch and African roots in the Global fashion, art and design industry, and beyond.
